Sveriges Radio Ekot has shown that both Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) and Labour Market Minister Mats Persson (L) had engaged in dubious stock transactions connected to political choices they were close to. Ekot is informed by Ulrik Åshuvud, Secretary-General of Transparency International Sweden, that Sweden ought to implement a system modeled after Norway's. There, ministers are forced to sell their shares, keep their hands off of them while in office, or delegate transaction management to a trustee. Ekot has met with law scholars who have made similar suggestions.
At the same time that Sweden negotiated what would turn out to be a billion-kronor order for vehicles for which Mildef provides equipment, Malmer Stenergard purchased shares in the defense corporation. On the same day that the government gave two billion kronor to a research project that Ericsson had sought, Persson purchased shares in the company. Maria Malmer Stenergard and Mats Persson have both stated that they have complied with Swedish laws and have done nothing improper. Both, however, have been brought to the attention of the Constitutional Committee of the Riksdag.
