Police say they discovered at least ten hand grenades in a rucksack near Västra hamnen, Malmö, on Friday night. Residents were evacuated, a VMA (Warning Message to the Public) was issued, and a sizable area was blocked off. The threat is over now that the hand grenades have been neutralized by the National Bomb Squad.
Police press spokesman Evelina Olsson told TT at 22.15 that "we will be lifting our VMA here, so the blockades will be reduced and hopefully all residents and others will be able to move freely in the area." The "exact number" of hand grenades that the National Bomb Protection Unit had to deal with is unknown to her. However, according to Evelina Olsson, at least eleven were brought up. Although no one has been taken into custody, a preliminary investigation into major violations of the law pertaining to flammable and explosive commodities has been started. Just before 18.30 on Friday night, the police were alerted to a "suspected dangerous object" in Västra hamnen. And it was quickly determined that it involved a number of hazardous objects.
Soon after, it was determined that it involved multiple hazardous items, and a massive operation was started. The National Bomb Protection Unit was dispatched to the scene, a wider area was cordoned off, and businesses and homes were evacuated. The blockades were extended, and a so-called VMA—important message to the public—was also released, urging locals to stay indoors and avoid windows. The police bomb technicians arrived on the scene to examine the object soon before 20.00, and the threat ended shortly after 22.00.
